A major oil company advises that over $100,000 was saved in wiring costs alone due to the new design architecture of the
Bently Nevada® Trendmaster Pro system. This company had originally installed approximately 40 miles of Trendmaster Pro "blue hose"
interconnect cable during Phase 1 of a project (2002-2003). It is estimated that the amount of cable will be reduced 50% to
20 miles during Phase 2 (2004-2006). While not an exact comparison, the geography covered by both phases is about the same
as is the number of system points.
Most of the cable savings (linear foot basis) are due to installing DSMs in the field and running an Ethernet link
(fiber optic cable) back to the Control Centers. Some of the site's homeruns have fiber in place, some do not.
Where they do not, a fiber optic infrastructure will be installed that can also be utilized by other projects.
As there is an ever decreasing number of routes into the Control Centers, savings will be realized not only on the
initial installation, but on future projects as well. Significant project savings will be associated with reduced manpower,
conduit, engineering, and other costs. However, the
customer really expects to save on the cost of future system expansion. By having DSMs located in the field, reduced
installation costs will make expansion projects easier to fund and are expected to increase system utilization.
