Situation – An older pulp mill had a failure on their lime kiln causing supporting roll bearing
failures and twisting of the kiln itself. An acoustic emission-based monitoring system had been installed on the
bearings to give operators bearing condition information. The large variation in the system's values and the
many resulting nuisance alarms caused operators to ignore it.
Solution – A 1900/65 General Purpose Equipment Monitor and 200350 Accelerometers were intalled.
High-frequency filtering and enveloping were configured in the 1900/65 to monitor the bearings.
Result – The monitored values were stable and no nuisance alarms occurred. The
system provided more reliable and consistent data for the plant's portable data collector system, since the sensors
were permanently installed, and the BNC connector output provided higher-quality data than magnetically mounted sensors.
Direct savings resulted from the system detecting lubrication problems on the lime kiln turning ring close to the bearings.
